UP AND COMERS EMBRACE THE DIGITAL DELIVERY OF SHEET MUSIC
The prospect of finding sheet music from new musicals just got a whole lot easier as a dedicated, talented and up-and-coming group of writers has recently launched a brilliant website dedicated to making their musical theatre songs widely available. According to the site’s About Us section, “NewMusicalTheatre.com is dedicated to the distribution and promotion of a new generation of musical theater writers who self-publish their own digital sheet music.” Its goal is to create a direct connection between the people who write music and the people who want to perform and listen to it. It provides an affordable and legal one-stop shop to discover and share the work of self-published writers. It aspires to foster a dynamic community where fans and actors can directly connect and impact the writers of tomorrow’s next big hits. This is an e-commerce website designed by writers for writers. It allows fans to directly support writers when they need it most – before their shows go to Broadway.
The site boasts a very impressive roster of writers from the cutting-edge of new musical theatre. Of course, our faves have to be Ryan Cunningham and Joshua Salzman (I LOVE YOU BECAUSE, NEXT THING YOU KNOW and more). I LOVE YOU BECAUSE has tons of great audition songs, as does the whole site! Actor’s everywhere know that casting directors LOVE hearing new and newer stuff at auditions and NewMusicalTheatre.com is THE source for the best new songs and shows.
In addition to the e-store for sheet music, the group is following up its wildly popular April 2010 launch concert and celebration with an even bigger event at NYC’s Canal Room on Monday, February 28, 2011. A full list of performers and featured songwriters will be announced shortly. Tickets are $25 and are available at http://canalroom.com/ or by calling 212.941.8100. Doors open at 7pm.
And, in super-exciting news for NYC-based talent, The Future of NewMusicalTheatre Contest is underway! Now, users of the site have an opportunity to win a chance to perform in the second NMT concert. To enter, performers should upload a video to YouTube of their performance of any song available for download on http://newmusicaltheatre.com/, then post it to the site’s Facebook fan page. All entries must be received by Sunday, February 20. One winner will be invited to perform their song at the Canal Room on February 28! For full info click here.
