Theatrical Rights Worldwide is proud to announce our latest Family Theatre acquisition: NO DOGS ALLOWED! This super cool new musical is based on the hugely popular children’s book by Sonia Manzano, perhaps better known as Maria from “Sesame Street”! Manzano adapted her own book and legendary composer Stephen Lawrence wrote the music, with renowned lyricist Billy Aronson completing the team. The show is Manzano’s semi-autobiographical tale of a young girl growing up in The Bronx and what happens on the day the family takes a trip to a state park. It’s a beautifully crafted, eloquently told story that speaks to families everywhere.
Sonia Manzano’s career began when she was accepted into the High School of Performing Arts. She won
a scholarship to Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and soon starred in the original production of the off-Broadway show “Godspell.” Sonia then joined the cast of “Sesame Street” where she eventually began writing scripts, for which she’s won 15 Emmy Awards. Sonia has received awards from the Association of Hispanic Arts, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families and Hispanic Heritage Award for Education. She also received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Notre Dame University and has been inducted into the Bronx Hall of Fame. NO DOGS ALLOWED features a tuneful, upbeat score by Stephen Lawrence. Stephen has composed over 250 songs and scores for “Sesame Street” resulting in three Emmy awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition.” He composed “Free to Be…You and Me” and several other songs for the landmark children’s album and Emmy Award-winning television special of the same name. He composed the top ten single, “You Take My Breath Away,” and was awarded three Gold Records. Film credits include “Bang the Drum Slowly” with Robert DeNiro, “One Summer Love” starring Susan Sarandon and Beau Bridges and “Red Riding Hood” with Isabella Rossellini and Craig T. Nelson.
