St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Bowie, Maryland is set to open CURTAINS tomorrow night (March 16, 2012), continuing an impressive fifteen year history of producing two major musicals annually. Founded 1996, the St. Matthew’s Musical Theatre Troupe is a nonprofit organization dedicated to amateur musical theater production and performance for the benefit of its community. They serve their community well, providing a vital vehicle for the Performing Arts through their phenomenal faith-based theatre group. Their city—about mid-way between the cities of Washington, DC and Annapolis, MD on the Route 50 corridor—is lucky to have such an experienced musical theatre company, who work tirelessly for weeks preparing their shows.
Now the venerable troupe is putting the finishing touches on CURTAINS the musical comedy ‘whodunit’, that features a book by RUPERT HOLMES, music by JOHN KANDER, lyrics by FRED EBB, original book and concept by PETER STONE, with additional lyrics by Kander and Holmes. The outrageous musical comedy played 511 performances on Broadway in 2007-08, and was nominated for eight Tony® Awards, including a win for David Hyde Pierce for his portrayal of musical theatre aficionado/Homicide Detective Frank Cioffi. The official release from the St. Matthew’s production describes CURTAINS as, “[a] send-up of backstage murder mystery plots – something like Agatha Christie with songs. Set in Boston, Massachusetts. The story follows the fallout when the supremely untalented star of the ‘musical’ ‘Robbin’ Hood of the Old West’ is murdered during her opening night curtain call. It is up to a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself.”
Theatrical Rights Worldwide salutes the St. Matthew’s Musical Theatre Troupe of Bowie, Maryland. Their proud tradition of presenting musical theatre for their community is to be applauded. TRW offers a round and our best wishes on another great opening night!
