Picture this: a college student, and long-time thespian with dreams of living and working in the Big Apple closing her eyes and holding her breath as she presses “send” on a game-changing email. As it turns out, pressing send was one of the best decisions she ever made. I’m Sabrina, and that college student is me.
Back in December I visited Theatrical Rights Worldwide while on a trip to New York City with a group of fellow theatre students from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. I had always been a performer but upon reaching college I found myself more interested in the business aspect of “show business”. During our visit we listened to Mr. Jim Hoare speak about this company and all of the things that go on here and I knew immediately I needed to know more.
A college professor once told me to write the following in my notebook at the beginning of our very first class: “There is no such thing as a child who hates music. But there are plenty who hate music teachers.” He then said if that is the only thing I remember from his class, it will be enough. Forty years later, it is the only thing I remember from that class. But its wisdom guided much of what I accomplished as a teacher and director.
Below are a few things I picked up from my forty years of teaching that I hope will help you succeed in your career as a teacher.
Whether you are more comfortable with a structured, linear rehearsal process or a more improvised, spontaneous approach, children, young and old, will sense if you are unprepared, stressed and/or ill-equipped for the task ahead.
As the Marketing Manager for TRW, I have come to realize that many of the skills I utilize daily and value in others were shaped through my education in the arts. In high school I was the president of my Thespian troupe (shout out to Troupe #533!) before moving on to receive a Bachelor’s degree…
Cynthia Erivo, the Tony Award winning actress currently starring in the Tony Award winning revival of THE COLOR PURPLE, is a force to be reckoned with. Check out the videos below to hear her incredible voice slay these Broadway and pop ballads. Here she is singing her show-stopping number from THE COLOR PURPLE, “I’m Here.” From TRW’s…

Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW) President and CEO Steve Spiegel announced today the acquisition of exclusive representation for stage performance rights to Broadway’s Tony Award®-winning Best Musical, JERSEY BOYS. “I’m happy to announce the signing of a long-term agreement for the Stock and Amateur rights to Jersey Boys. I’m proud to be the home of this truly great Broadway show,” Spiegel said, shortly after closing the deal, from his office in TRW’s Times Square headquarters.
JERSEY BOYS joins TRW’s major licensing assets MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT, MEMPHIS, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, THE COLOR PURPLE, ALL SHOOK UP, GHOST THE MUSICAL, BIG FISH, RING OF FIRE, CURTAINS, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and a select group of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) and Off Broadway and Regional Theatre musicals.
Musical theatre licensor Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW), founded by President & CEO Steve Spiegel in 2006, announces Spiegel’s acquisition of full ownership of the company. The venture was initially a partnership between Spiegel and Northwater Capital, an international IP fund based in Toronto.
Spiegel spoke briefly from TRW’s New York City offices as the deal was signed: “I’m immensely proud of what we’ve created at TRW, first as a start-up, then as a growing business and now as a fully-realized premier Broadway licensing house. Throughout my thirty-five years in this business I’ve enabled theatrical participation and performance for high schools, professional and community theatres, youth groups, national tours and all our customers around the world,” Spiegel said.
