After losing his career and family, David, a man of color in rural South Carolina, struggles to make ends meet and regain contact with his young son. In exchange for David’s friendship and obedience, his mentor, Paul, a wealthy, white retiree, promises legal and material help. But when David invites Tally, a charming out-of-towner with a secret agenda, for an illicit evening at his apartment, their electric romance alters all three lives in shocking ways.
DAVID — Late 30s, “brown,” a lifelong jock. Born in another country. Raised from infancy in Moncks Corner, a small town near Charleston, South Carolina. People call all those towns the Lowcountry.
PAUL — 60s, white. From Charleston.
TALLY — Late 30s, white. Raised near David.
Place
David’s apartment, a studio. There’s a sitting area with a small kitchen, separated from “the bedroom” by a curtain that hangs precariously from the ceiling. It’s summer in South Carolina. Heat, bugs.
