Olga, Masha and Irina dream of going to Manhattan. There it lies, a mere fifteen-minute ferry ride from their home in Weehawken, New Jersey. But that ferry ride may as well be a mission to Mars. As they remain, yearning, decade after decade the walls of their home crowd in until they can barely move at all. Borrowing as much from Beckett as Chekhov, The Three Sisters of Weehawken wonders at the forces that keep us from following our dreams and begs the question — “what makes a life, a life?”
OLGA — The oldest Prozorov sister. The hard-working headmistress spinster. Anxious and depressed, she hoards Chinese food containers. She ages from late 29 to 80’s
MASHA — The middle sister. Grrr. A painter. Fierce and vain and controlling. She ages from 22 to 80’s
IRINA — The youngest sister. Naïve and hopeful. Desperate to go to Manhattan. She ages from 21 to 80’s
NATASHA — Their sister-in-law. 18 at the top of the play. Smart and competent, yet somehow needs their love and approval.
