Rockville Musical Theatre, at the Town Square in Rockville, Maryland, is a nearly 40 year-old organization that has become a beloved fixture on the local arts scene. Their Mission Statement, as a Not-for-Profit, is like many community theatre’s statements across the nation and the world:
Rockville Musical Theatre, a volunteer organization, is dedicated to the presentation of high quality musical theatre designed to entertain and enrich the community while showcasing local talent.
TRW salutes the backbone of the American Musical Theatre: The Community Theatre. Community Theatre is a place where people from many different backgrounds can come together to experience the beauty and healing power of the Arts as performers, directors, designers, box office staff, house staff and so many other vital volunteer positions that make shows come to life!
The RMT’s upcoming production of TRW’s ALL SHOOK UP, is a shining example of the unique collaboration that is the Community Theatre. Their cast of over 30 brings a wide representation of Rockville’s community to the stage.
ALL SHOOK UP is such a joyous musical theatre romp that it unites cast and audience alike wherever and whenever it is performed. This awesome Broadway show is fueled by the songs of the number 1 music brand on the planet…and perhaps beyond…Elvis Presley. ALL SHOOK UP is a good old fashioned book musical that features a Shakespearean twist on an age-old tale, masterfully brought to the nifty 1950’s by none other than the Tony Award-winning Joe DiPietro (MEMPHIS, FALLING FOR EVE). DiPietro’s take on the show is a wonderful mash-up of the story of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and a crazy Elvis movie! DiPietro explains his awesome writing choice: “One reason I think Elvis’s work has endured and still touches people so strongly is that he sang with such passion. You really felt all of the joy and all of the heartache in these songs. Listen to the lyrics of “All Shook Up.” It’s really about needing someone so much they rock you to your soul,” DiPietro said in an interview during the show’s Broadway run. DiPietro continued, “The bottom line with Elvis’s music is that it makes a lot of people very happy, even 50 years after it was recorded. And
I thought, what other type of entertainment form does that? And that’s when I came up with the Shakespeare comedies, which are very much about love and finding your joy, marriage, passion and all the good stuff of life. That combination was, I thought, potent and a lot of fun.” Indeed! over a thousand productions later, ALL SHOOK UP is quickly becoming a star performer for theatre organizations everywhere.
The story is a classic: Into a square little town in a square little state rides a guitar-playing roustabout who changes everything and everyone he meets in a hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy that’ll have your audiences jumpin’ out of their blue suede shoes with such classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”
RMT’s production of ALL SHOOK UP runs November 2-17, 2012. Tickets are on sale now.
