Comin’ in! A Slew of New B’way Shows Set to Open in 2011

With SPIDERMAN TURN OFF THE DARK grabbing all the ink, one might think it was the only new tuner in town. But, much to the delight of musical theatre fans everywhere, there are enough new shows to fill a giant, glittering, ladies evening shoe! (That’s a reference to PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT for the uninitiated.) With a slew of closings in December and January, B’way theaters are busily getting ready to load-in a much anticipated roster of new musicals, all hoping to garner better notices than the recent critical slaughter of the mega-mess known as SPIDERMAN.

Leading the pack is the Broadway debut of the genius creative team behind TV’s SOUTH PARK, Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with AVENUE Q’s Robert Lopez), THE BOOK OF MORMON. Set to start previews on Feb 24 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The story follows the adventures of two mismatched Mormon kids on their mission…to a place very, very far away from SLC! The show is directed by Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker, with choreography by Nicholaw.

WonderlandWONDERLAND, a new musical look at the “Alice in Wonderland” tale from composer Frank Wildhorn moves into the Marquis Theatre to begin previews on March 21st en route to an April 17th opening. A new take on the Lewis Carroll classic, WONDERLAND is about a modern-day woman who goes on a life-changing adventure far below the streets of New York City, where she meets all the familiar characters from the original.

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL, based on the smash-hit movie, is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up Priscilla on Bwayfinding more than they could have ever dreamed of. Still selling out in London, heavy on outrageous costumes and set to a hit parade of dance-floor favorites, PRISCILLA arrives at the Palace Theatre for a Feb 28 preview start to the express lane to what’s sure to be a festive opening on March 20th.

Hallelujah! Another of London’s hot musical sensations hits Broadway this March as SISTER ACT rolls into town to begin an open-ended stand at the Broadway Theatre. Another mega-musical based on a film,  SISTER ACT features an original score by Alan Menken and is directed by the legendary Jerry Zaks. First preview is scheduled for March 24th with a April 20th opening night.

A host of plays and musical revivals are also scheduled to ‘bow-in’ (as some long-running shows bow-out?) this year as well in what is shaping up to be a very busy season on the Great White Way.
